2) INTERESTING TOWNS AND VILLAGES IN THE AREA
Nafplion
Nafplion is one of the most beautiful
towns in Greece. It was the first capital of Modern Greece may
remind visitors of the Plaka. With two mountains crowned by medieval
fortresses overlooking the town and the small island fortress called
the Bourtzi that once protected the harbor, Nafplion is full of
restaurants, shops, cafes, beautiful old buildings, hotels of all
catagories and a beach. For
people who want to visit an island but don't like boats, Nafplion
is a good alternative and just over an hour's drive from Livadi.
A trip to Nafplion can easily be combined with a visit to the important
ancient sites of Myceneae, Epidavros, Nemea, Argos and Corinth.
Leonidion, Cosmas and the Monastery of Elona
The traditional town of Leonidion is
about 7km further South from Livadi. Here you will find many cafés
and local traditional tavernas. There are also numerous grand mansion
houses “Archontika” dating from 19th century which were built by
rich merchants. A beautiful 45 minute drive up a deep valley takes
you from Leonidion to the mountain village of Cosmas. On the way,
you can stop at the famous monastery of Elonas which seems to hang
on the side of the cliff (don't worry, you can drive to it). Cosmas
is quite cooler than the coast - and has some great tavernas so
this is a good place for lunch.
The Parnona Mountain Range
Other mountain villages in the Parnona mountain range are also
worth visiting including, Paleochori and Agios Vassilios (where
you can visit Martia's taverna). Further afield you can drive to
other beautiful mountain villages such as Kastanitsa and
Prastos (see the photo below). You could then make a loop and
return to Livadi via Astros on the coast.
3) LOCAL BEACHES AND SEASIDE VILLAGES
15 minutes' drive (7km) to the North of Livadi is the coastal town
of Tyros with its picturesque harbour. The 3km seafront of Tyros
is a pebbly strip of beach which can get quite crowded in August.
However just to the South of Tyros is the deserted beach of Lygouria
(windmill beach). You can see the windmills just before you reach
Tyros and must climb down a path to get to the beach. And just
to the North of Tyros is the beautiful Tigani beach.

South of Livadi you can go to
the picturesque fishing port of Plaka and its beautiful
sand and pebble beach with 3 great harbour-side tavernas. Three
km further along the coast is a lovely beach at the village
of Poulithra. From Poulithra a road takes you up to the mountain
and from here you can drive down a spectacular windy road to the
almost deserted beach of Fokianos and have lunch at the seaside
taverna.
